Plan of an Estate called Mill Hill and New Lockers with Oak Farm in the Parish of Great Bursted [sic] and County of Essex-belonging to-John Ward EsqR.

London: J&W Newton, 1818. Pen, ink, and watercolor on vellum, 19.2” x 22.2”. Splits at top corners tissue stabilized, vellum a bit wrinkled at repairs, light irregular toning, two erasures darkened from being re-colored, about very good. Item #100215

Very attractive example of the mapmaker’s art from the talented firm of J&W Newton, London based surveyors and mapmakers. Title cartouche decorated with a presumed view of Great Burstead, large north indicator and a 36 item key drawn as a partially rolled broadside nailed to the map. Expertly drawn in great detail with individual trees along hedgerows colored and bearing an eastern shadow, buildings, roads and windmills shown. Bodelian Library cites numerous similar estate plans by the Newton firm.
