New York: Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning, 1855. Broadsheet, wax engraving with full hand color, 36” x 28”. Ref: Phillips "Maps" p.683. Three small marginal separations expertly closed otherwise very clean and bright, nearly fine overall. Item #100221
Wonderful example of the decorative cartographic and historical broadsides published by Ensign and associates during the middle 19th century. A 17” x 25” map of the state, colored by county, dominates the sheet and is surrounded by seven statistical and historical tables, state Coat of Arms, plans of Philadelphia & Pittsburgh and vignettes of William Penn, Ben Franklin, Independence Hall, Robert Morris, Benjamin Rush as well as Washington Crossing the Delaware after Emmanuel Leutze. Very scarce, only the second example we have seen offered in 25 years.
