New Tork: H. Schile, no date but 1870. Large folio, 2-stone lithograph, 19.2” x 25”. Ref: Peters America on Stone pp. 358-359. Item #100223
Composite of 7 mountain vistas with the central presentation being a 8” x 25.5” panorama Viewed From Mt. Hope, Ulster County identifying six peaks with three smaller captioned views above and three below. Each of the vignette views pictures a passenger train steaming through the landscape. The central view includes, among others, a sketch artist capturing the vista. Whom we presume to be Schile.
Harry Peters refers to Schile’s work as outrageously crude however; in this case one might disagree. His Panorama is actually rather charming, composed and executed with a naiveté more reminiscent of American folk art than crude lithography.
