Philadelphia And Warren: R.L. Barnes and R.R. Russell, 1865. 1st edition, 16mo embossed cloth, folding map, lithograph, wash and outline color, 23" x 28.5" Not in Streeter, Phillips or Simonetti. Ref: Stephenson Land Ownership Maps 808. Item #100231
The best period map of the Warren oil district published at the time and superior in its showing of oil wells and springs than those maps of Colton, Root, Anthony & Co., Towsend & Dale and also the Beers, Ellis & Soule regional atlas. Full color by township with warrant numbers noted throughout and land ownership named though primarily along the Allegheny River and tributaries. Nineteen oil wells and springs are shown, several of which record company names, and are likely representative of data compiled by Barnes and Russell in 1864. Dated notary stamp of H.H. Shillingford, Phila., on pastedown and verso of map indicating this copy was issued March 10th, 1865. R.L. Barnes also issued in 1865, Oil District maps of Venango, Forest, Elk, Green and Clarion Counties along with a General Map of the Oil Region. All are today quite rare.
